Study the rules
Decide on the numbers of GC-Riders, Climbers, Sprinters and Stage winners
Ideally you want riders who can succeed in more than one category
Study the stages/courses of the next race - how many flat stages, mountain stages, TT, Breakaway Stages?
Study previous years results - many riders specialise for certain races.
How reliable are your riders? Do they actually finish stage races?
How predictable are your riders? Are they consistent in their performance?
Does your rider have a strong team behind him? Is he the leader or a domestique for this race?
Consider the location: Local riders do better at home
